Smart Saver Tips
As temperatures continue to dip, think about easy ways you can cut back on the heating bills in your properties. Caulk gaps around windows to reduce drafts. Put programmable thermostats in the common area so you can account for temperature fluctuations and daytime hours when tenants are typically away from the property. Clean HVAC filters every few months, so the system doesn’t have to work as hard to be effective. If your property has a basement or attic, make sure they are insulated.
For a bigger investment, consider replacing single-pane windows with double-pane. Up to a quarter of a property’s heat loss can be attributed to windows.

To keep apartments cool in the summer, keep shades drawn during the day to keep out the heat. On sunny days in the winter, open shades wide to passively heat apartments.

Humidity means heat. In the summer, plan on doing moisture-creating activities like washing dishes, doing laundry, bathing and cooking before noon or past 8 p.m.

TVs, computers and other electronics suck up power even when they aren’t turned on. Plug them into an accessible power strip that can easily be flipped on and off. Unplug hair dryers and other styling tools when not in use.

Arrange furniture so it doesn’t block radiators or vents. Free-flowing air helps keep heating and cooling bills low.

If your apartment comes with ceiling fans, utilize these instead of relying on air conditioning. If you have the option to reverse direction, fans can also help heat apartments by pushing warm air down.
